Priest and University (south-east corner) has a Japanese grocery store. A more general Asian grocery store is on Dobson and Southern in Mesa, next to a really awesome boba place. There's some places up in Phoenix, but I don't know where they are, as Tempe and Mesa are my stomping grounds. :)

Thanks for the tips! Do these places sell bento boxes and accessories? Or are they more like grocery stores?

I know the place on Priest sells veggie cutters and some other things, but no boxes. At least not the last time I went. The one on Dobson has a non-food section. One of the bigger bento communities has a list of places that had several for PHX, but I haven't been to any of them, as the bus ride would not be fun.

What type of curry was that? Yellow? I tried to make a yellow curry with coconut milk like one that I had at a restraunt (masaman curry? pinnaples and cashews in it...) but it was way too spicey for me...wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Vietnamese style a la my mom. We use madras curry powder, which is pretty mild.

I love the french bread idea. I imagine it can work with other shapes too, though I honestly have no ideas at the moment :P She does it with cooked french bread already right? And not french bread dough?

Right -- already cooked. :) Best if you do it hot out of the oven, but it still works if the bread is room temp.

Best Asian Markets in Phoenix
(Anonymous)

We have two excellent asian markets here in Phoenix.

* Lee Lee Oriental Supermarket (2025 N Dobson Rd, Chandler)

Lee Lee is the grand mothership of Asian supermarkets in probably all of Arizona. You walk in during the weekend and it's complete hustle and bustle throughout the entire store.

Fairly large inside, Lee Lee is also really diverse in its offerings. While at least half of its aisles are dedicated to Chinese foodstuffs and other goods, you've got whole aisles solely dedicated Japanese, Korean, Indian/Pakistani, Thai/Persian/Dutch/Indonesian, and Brazilian/Colombian stuff, among others. Large freezer section with items from all the aforementioned countries, plus fresh seafood. The Japanese aisle is well-stocked with all things Pocky, which makes me one happy, gluttonous camper. Other aisles include well-priced cookware, dinnerware, Asian candy, any spice you can think of, teas, etc.

There are also birds roosting in the lighting rafters, and you see them flying around the store and hear them chirping. Don't know how sanitary that is, but it does add a different dimension to your standard Asian shopping experience.

* The COFCO Chinese Cultural Center (668 North 44th Street, Phoenix)

Where Lee Lee is the commoner's market, the COFCO Chinese Cultural Center is the up-scale shopping district. The grocery has the best fresh fish market in the state. The restaurants and shops and are interesting as well, especially if you are looking for an inexpensive unique asian gifts. All of this wrapped in exquisite Chinese architecture with traditional gardens and replicas of ancient pagodas and statues.

Lee Lee is a really awesome supermarket, as the person mentioned. It's probably the best I've ever been to and I can get lost in there just browsing (don't go in with an empty tummy!). I definitely suggest checking that place out.

As for good weather...I'm not sure what kind of weather you're coming from, but it's been pretty cold here too. It snowed in Tucson!

Would Lee Lee have bento boxes and accessories? Or is it more snacks and food to put inside bento?

I see upper 60s in Phoenix. It is 30s here!

I looked for bentos and accessories at Lee Lee and haven't found much. But I'm probably going today, just to check it out (I live a couple miles away from it) and I'll let you know if I find anything.

Totoro Bentos

Are you making the Totoro scenes in your bentos? These are awesome! My son and I love Totoro. I am just starting to research bentos for him for his school lunches. How did you fashion the scenes (if you made them)? I've also been to your blog a bit - fabulous by the way!

Thanks - Pam

Sorry I missed this post, it may be too late to add to your Phx area plea for Bento supplies.

The ones that have been mentioned are good. LeeLee has very little bento supplies, but the Japanese Market had a few the last time I went.

There is a Korean market on Dobson and Southern that had some boxes. Also there is a new Sanrio store in the same plaza as LeeLee that I noticed last night, but didn't get to check out (you know I dragged the hubby through LeeLee for long enough). There is a Sanrio store in Arizona Mills Mall that has some boxes and accessories. They were too pink and too expensive for me.

I hope you were able to find something. I often feel frustrated that in this large city I can't seem to find bento supplies easily.
